Does anyone else find masturbation to be an effective way to combat sensory overload?
When I do too many things at once, or something overstimulates me, and the sensory overload kicks in... it is not easy to get rid of it.
If I lie still in silence in the dark for long enough it goes away... but doing that is practically impossible for me (thanks ADHD). Going for a walk used to help, but then I moved into a new neighbourhood and don't feel comfortable walking here yet. Going for a nap fixes it, but I'm not always tired enough to do that, so it's basically just lying in silence which is ADHD misery. And apart from that, there's not much else I can do - it sort of feels like once I go into sensory overload I'm stuck for a while. I can't really do anything I enjoy (listening to music, writing, watching TV) because it'll overload me more, so I'm stuck doing nothing and being miserable.
But I've made the connection that, for some reason, when I feel like this, going and masturbating often actually helps lessen the overload. By the time I'm finished, I feel calmer, and the overload is still there, but it's more subdued and I'm generally able to resume some quiet activities like the ones I listed above. I'm not sure if it actually has any sort of overload-reducing quality inherently, or if it's just the fact that it's something non-overstimulating I can focus on for long enough that the overload lessens... but I think it's pretty interesting! So, does anyone else find masturbation to be an effective way to combat sensory overload? Curious if this is a common experience.
